What Are My Implant Size & Shape Options?

We offer a variety of implant size and shape options to help you achieve your desired breast appearance. Implant sizes are measured in cubic centimeters (cc) and range from approximately 120cc to 800cc, with larger implants providing more noticeable size increases.

Implants come in different shapes and materials, including round and teardrop. Round implants are typically used to create a fuller, more rounded appearance to the breasts, while teardrop-shaped implants provide a more natural-looking slope and contour to the breasts. We offer both silicone and saline breast implant options to choose from.

During your consultation, our experienced plastic surgeons will work with you to determine the best implant size, shape, and material for your body type, breast anatomy, and desired results.

Silicone Cohesive Gel Breast Implants

Cohesive gel breast implants feature a firmer silicone gel than the standard silicone implant. The gel in cohesive gel implants has the consistency of a “soft solid” and can be compared to the texture of a “gummy bear”. If the gel implant were cut in two there would be no gross shift of the gel, i.e. it will keep its shape regardless of positioning. Cohesive gel implants are shaped to conform to the natural shape of a woman’s breast in that they are thinner at the top and fuller at the bottom where a woman’s breast naturally extends. There are two key advantages of choosing cohesive gel breast implants, the first of which is longevity. Cohesive gel implants do not tend to develop folds over time and thus are likely to last longer than traditional implants. The second advantage is that because of their shape, cohesive gel implants offer surgeons greater control of the overall shape of the breasts post-surgery.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants are a type of breast implant that is filled with a sterile saltwater solution. They are often used in breast reconstruction surgery to create symmetrical, full breasts. Saline breast implants can provide natural-looking results and are preferred by some patients because they can be adjusted after the initial surgery to achieve better symmetry or balance between the breasts. Saline implants may also have lower rates of complications such as implant rupture or capsular contracture, which is a condition where the tissue surrounding the implant becomes hard and uncomfortable. At Plastic Surgery Arts of New Jersey, our experienced plastic surgeons have extensive knowledge and expertise in using saline breast implants to achieve beautiful, natural-looking breast reconstruction results.

What does the procedure entail?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that involves placing implants, typically made of saline or silicone, into the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle to enhance the size and shape of the breasts. Before the surgery, the patient will have a consultation with a plastic surgeon to determine the best implant type, size, and shape to achieve their desired results.

On the day of the procedure, the patient will be placed under general anesthesia. The plastic surgeon will make a small incision in the breast crease, around the areola, or in the armpit, depending on the patient’s preference and anatomy. The implant is then placed through the incision and positioned either on top of or underneath the chest muscle, depending on the desired result.

Once the implant is in place, the incision is closed with sutures or surgical tape. The patient will then be monitored in a recovery area before being released to go home the same day. Recovery time varies from patient to patient, but most people can return to their normal daily activities within a few days and resume exercise and other strenuous activities after a few weeks.

Commonly Asked Breast Implant Questions

Good candidates for breast augmentation are women who are in good overall health, have realistic expectations about the results of the procedure, and desire an increase in breast size or a more proportionate breast shape.

Breast implants are not lifetime devices and may need to be replaced or removed at some point in the future. The longevity of the results can vary depending on factors such as the type of implant, age, and overall health.

Your surgeon will provide specific instructions on how to prepare for the procedure, including avoiding certain medications and supplements and quitting smoking. You may also need to arrange for transportation to and from the surgery center and arrange for help with daily activities during the recovery period.

Patients can expect some discomfort, swelling, and bruising for several days after the procedure. They will need to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity for several weeks.

Most patients feel well enough to return to work within a week of the breast implant procedure. You can be up and walking immediately after the procedure, and light exercise and more moderate workouts can be considered after 3-4 weeks, but heavy exercise routines should be avoided for at least a full month after breast implant surgery. Always consult with your physician before starting an exercise regime, as breast implant recovery times vary per patient.

The plastic surgeons of PSANJ specialize in endoscopic breast augmentation – a minimally invasive technique in which a small incision is made in the armpit. Using this method, there will be no visible scars on your breasts after surgery. This breast augmentation technique, places the breast implant through an opening in the armpit using a surgical telescope, resulting in improved symmetry and a shorter recovery time when compared to the “belly button” incision for implants. With members of our surgical team rated as “Top Doctors” by New York Magazine and New Jersey Monthly, PSANJ is a top destination for breast augmentation in New Jersey, New York, and the Tri-State Area. The physicians of Plastic Surgery Arts of New Jersey are also revered for their breast reconstruction capabilities.

Note: One of the most important steps in the breast implant process is the selection of your surgical team. At Plastic Surgery Arts of New Jersey, we encourage you to do your homework: investigate your options: ask questions, see before-and-after breast implant photos, and ask about advanced training and certifications. Also ask about the use of advanced breast augmentation techniques, as well as the different breast implant devices available.
